About us
A "Compeer" is a friend, a companion, an equal. The Compeer program offers you the opportunity to change a lonely life. We match friends like you with those who need them the most.
While we may not prefer to think about it, mental illness can happen to anyone. In fact, one of every four families in our community is affected by mental illness to some extent. Like any other illness, it can begin unexpectedly and cross all boundaries. When it happens, the need for a friend to turn to is never greater.
Yet many people referred to Compeer are alone, without the vital support of family and friends. They are from every walk of life and range in age from 1 to 100. The Compeer program recognizes that mental illness can be the "loneliest illness in the world" and believes that volunteers can provide the comfort and motivation needed to win the day-to-day battles faced by people diagnosed with a mental illness.
Compeer is a grassroots response to the gap in traditional support systems for individuals diagnosed with mental illness. Since 1973, Compeer has provided more than 20,000 individuals with a caring and accepting friend and advocate.
Compeer consumers receive regular support from mental health professionals. Volunteers fill consumers' needs for one-to-one relationships. Professional guidance is always available from trained therapists and Compeer staff.
Remember when friendship was so simple?
Compeer gives you that opportunity again!
